|
|
On January 21, 2008 TRAC Enrichment Center, Inc. hosted its 4th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at the Images of Hope facility. Students, parents and community volunteers participated in various activities that greatly benefited both Pitt and Martin Counties.
During this time, over 300 care packages were assembled and distributed in both counties. Students and adult volunteers helped distribute care packages to the different locations. In Martin County, care packages were delivered to the Williamston Rehabilitation Center. In Pitt County, care packages were delivered to Greenfield Place Nursing facility and the Greenville Community Shelter. The care packages included hair combs, wash cloths, socks, puzzle books, snacks, and various other personal care items.
In addition, Students participated in activities that supported the “Eight Keys to a Better Me” character education strategy. The students were shown the true meaning of Respect, Honesty, Patriotism, Courage, Kindness, Responsibility, Self-worth, and feelings. These traits were reinforced through literature, sharing, cooperative learning, role playing, peer coaching, and hands on experiences.
The students also created Banners of Hope which will be displayed as the Hall of Dreams at the Robersonville site. These banners displayed their artistic interpretation of Dr. King’s teachings and practices. The students will also be discussing and learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in more detail throughout the month of January.

TRAC Enrichment Center, Inc. 3rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Greenville, NC TRAC Enrichment Center hosted its 3rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at Margaret Hearne Elementary School, in Wilson, NC, and Monday, January 15, 2007, at Good Hope Church in Winterville, NC. During the week of January 8th to 11th, students at Margaret Hearne Elementary, and TRAC Enrichment Center, Greenville, NC participated in character building education that reflected Martin Luther King, Jr.'s character with a character banner design activity by the students at the closing of the lesson.
Americans have been honoring Dr. King's legacy since Congress passed the Martin Luther King Jr.'s Holiday and Service Act in 1994, by volunteering in their communities. TRAC Enrichment Center believes Pitt County as well as neighboring counties are getting more and more involved. In the past two years, we have had over 200 volunteers participate in our "Day of Service" activities. This year, we exceeded the previous two years with over 200 more volunteers and participants.
The Martin Luther King Day of Service is sponsored by The Hands On Network of Atlanta, Georgia, and the Corporation for National Community Service (C.N.C.S.). Our community partners and partners of the community were East Carolina University, Faith based organizations, Parents, Elementary and Middle School Students, TRAC Enrichment Center’s Staff, McCloud’s Computer & Skills Training Center, Mega Works Graphics, Local Restaurants and Businesses, Mitchell’s Funeral Home staff, Mitchell’s Beauty Salon, North Carolina Eastern Regional Association of Black Social Workers, Delta Sigma Theta, Margaret Hearne Elementary staff and administrators and Community Leaders.
